Animal Shogi (“dobutsu shogi” in Japanese) is a simplified version of Shogi.

For young children to learn shogi, a female professional shogi player Madoka Kitao invented the rule and the game was released by the Ladies Professional Shogi-Players’ Association of Japan in 2008.

Animal Shogi is played on 3 by 4 board, and there are 4 pieces; lion, forest, giraffe, and elephant.

Because Animal Shogi doesn’t have kanji, anyone in the world can play it!!

This video explains how it works in English.

Although it mainly designed for young children, it would be perfect for shogi beginners or elders’ brain training.

This is JAPAN Style!
