OMG! Is Totoro really “my neighbor”!? Actually this is what someone created just for personal enjoyment. A 59 year old man, HIDEBOCHI-san, who runs an udon restaurant in Mie prefecture, created this amazing life-sized (3m tall) Totoro! The motivation for this project? His two granddaughters. They were born and grew up in Vancouver, Canada and lately ended up moving back to Japan. Those girls love Totoro a lot, but they left their favorite Totoro doll back in Canada. So, their grandpa, HIDEBOCHI-san, decided to make a huge Totoro for them, so as to not to miss Canada too much.
An elaborately drawn design plan.
He calculates Totoro’s waist measures as 4m! w(0_o)w.
HIDEBOCHI carefully curves water pipes for the body frame.
It seems like the five gas stoves at his restaurant help a lot.
White bathroom tiles for the teeth.
Brown and gray rugs for the fur.
The whiskers are made out of long chopsticks.
There’s even a heater to dry off the fur from the inside with hot air.
Glueing the rugs. It’s really becoming Totoro!
Look at these girls’ happy smiles!! HIDEBOCHI-san is such a loving grandpa 😀
Here is a whole video documenting the project.
