Savory aromas wafting out of restaurants often make a passerby feel hungry. For Japanese people, the smell of “yakiniku” (=grilled meat) is special, stimulating empty stomachs and arousing appetites. But yakiniku is not a simple, everyday meal – it’s more akin to a kind of feast that we can’t always afford. Also, major yakiniku spreads can be a great enemy to a lean diet. And of course, some folks just hate to get that strong and smoky “Yes I have been inside a yakiniku restaurant!” smell on their clothes. For those who love yakiniku but can’t always indulge in it for whatever reason it, there’s an interesting free iPhone app called “Hana(=nose) Yakiniku”. This app is used in conjunction with a small device that actually diffuses the aroma of yakiniku. The app itself is free, but the kit costs ¥3,480 (US$33.8), and the refill is ¥1,000($9.7).
Here is an introduction video.
How to use is quite simple.
1) Choose a flavor from items such as short ribs/ beef tongue/ buttered potato
4) Eat (Let’s prepare steamed rice or lettuce leaves that go nicely with yakiniku)
Honestly speaking, I will probably just spring for the real yakiniku dinner if I have to pay more than $30 for the kit…(^^;) But still, I have to admit it’s quite an interesting idea!!
