In 2008, the total sales of vending machines in Japan was 5 trillion 747 billion 800 million yen.
None of other country sold that much with their vending machines.
Why vending machines are so giant industry in Japan?
First of all, it’s because Japan is safe. If the public order wasn’t good, vending machines shouldn’t be out because they carry a lot of money.
Secondly, as you can see from the “Astro Boy” cartoon, Japanese people traditionally have strong interest in mechanics; therefore, there is no aversion to use machines.
Also, the diversification of tastes would be considered.
There are usually 20 or more different products in a vending machine, so that it meets any person’s taste.
For example, one vending machine has cold and hot, sweet and unsweetened drinks at the same time.
In the recent years, vending machines getting more diverse and improved.
Some machines carry batteries and supply drinks during natural disaster.
